What Was Here Before

MA VILLA — an Innovo story

Before anything could be built, something had to go.

The old villa, still standing in the Dubai light

Still a house. Already scheduled.

The hard part was the ground.

The first strike of demolition against the old villa

Then the first strike.

Eleven years of walls, gone in an afternoon.

And by evening the plot read:

Out of the Ground

FOUNDATION · STRUCTURE

Reinforcement steel rising from the foundation

First it was steel.

Concrete pouring into the raft at dawn

The pour started at 4 AM and did not stop.

ACT THREE

The Bones Become a Building

ENVELOPE · FIT-OUT

Openings becoming windows across the façade

Openings became windows. Gaps became rooms.

Cable and conduit threaded through the walls

Nine kilometres of cable, never to be seen again.

Timber worked into place
Plaster smoothed onto the walls

Stone. Timber. Plaster.

I was the client and the company on the same project.

The company was harder to please.

On the last day the architect asked when it started feeling like home.

“The day you tore down the other one.”

The house lived in, warm and finished

She stopped walking through it and started living in it.
